While you are in the process of getting the help you need, it is important to do all you can at home.

           

 
Keep bacteria out! 
 



Use a toothbrush and floss to get the big stuff out. Your toothbrush will remove plaque from the front and back of your teeth and floss gets the stuff between your teeth and under your gums.

 

Brush your tongue thoroughly.

 

Use a mouth rinse (Listerine, ProHealth) to kill bacteria hiding in other places. Swish for at  least 30 seconds to be effective.

 

 

Use a fluoride rinse (Act, etc.) daily to help strengthen teeth. If you have cavities, your dental professional may prescribe a stronger fluoride to use at home.

 

Do not rinse with water following toothbrushing and rinsing. You reduce the effectiveness by diluting the fluoride with water.

 

Use mouth rinse in a device like WaterPik to kill bacteria between the teeth and under the gums.

 

Chew gum that contains Xylitol as it's primary (first) sweetener. Ice Breakers, Ice Cubes is the only gum readily available in stores containing therapeutic doses.  Xylitol has been shown to reduce, and in some cases eliminate, bacteria that damage teeth and gums. Xylitol has also been shown to help in rebuilding teeth. Four to five pieces per day chewed no longer than 30 minutes (longer will wear on the jaw joint as the gum becomes firmer) is effective.

 

Stay away from sipping sodas and other sugary beverages. This is the same as giving bacteria a constant supply of food all day. Stay away from Mountain Dew! Sip water, drink beverages with meals.

 

Candy isn't the only sugar food bacteria love. Potato chips and breads will convert to sugar and are frequently stuck in the teeth after eating.

 

Stay away from suckers and other hard candies you keep in your mouth. This is similar to the sugar bath provided by sodas. Stay away at least until you are in a healthy state.
